When we have a cataract, we may see halos or "ghosting" around points of light. This is caused by the len's decreased ability to focus light.
Because a lens with a cataract is more opaque than a healthy lens, its ability to focus light to a point on the retina is decreased. The lens with the cataract scatters the light on the back of the retina, making a point of light appear to have a halo around it.
